Tasks to Tease Apart Scatterplot Design Decisions

چکیده
Design Decisions Procedure Scatterplots are among the most common methods for exploring and presenting data, covering a wide range of tasks and designs. The variety of scatterplot designs has created a proliferation of potential design decisions to consider when constructing a scatterplot. However, there remain many unexamined assumptions in respect to the trade-offs between these decisions. Here, we begin the process of synthesizing recent work to build descriptive knowledge of how design decisions affect the analysis tasks viewers perform with scatterplots. Through deriving twelve abstracted scatterplot tasks, we can start to tease apart the different affordances of design decisions, and begin to formulate a basis for prescriptive scatterplot design.

Near-Optimal Bayesian Active Learning with Noisy Observations
We tackle the fundamental problem of Bayesian active learning with noise, where we need to adaptively select from a number of expensive tests in order to identify an unknown hypothesis sampled from a known prior distribution. In the case of noise–free observations, a greedy algorithm called generalized binary search (GBS) is known to perform near–optimally. We show that if the observations are ...
متن کاملVisualizing Metadata: LevelTable vs. GranularityTable in the SuperTable/Scatterplot Framework
This paper will describe ongoing efforts to ease the information retrieval process on metadata, using a SuperTable/Scatterplot framework recently named VisMeB (Visual Metadata Browser). Based on the combination of a SuperTable (in two design variants) and a Scatterplot (also in two design variants), users can follow different search strategies to achieve results. Usability testing has showen, t...
متن کاملThe mysteries of sexual identity. The germ cell's perspective.
Animal germ cells differentiate as sperm or eggs, depending on their sex. Somatic signals tell germ cells whether they reside in a male or female body, but how do germ cells interpret those external cues to acquire their own sexual identity? A critical aspect of a germ cell's sexual puzzle is that the sperm/egg decision is closely linked to the cell-cycle decision between mitosis and meiosis. M...
متن کاملStimulus modulation of pseudoneglect: influence of line geometry.
A variety of stimulus factors have recently been shown to influence the performance of normal subjects on line bisection tasks (i.e., pseudoneglect), independent of motoric factors such as scanning or hand use [McCourt & Jewell (1999) Neuropsychologia 35, 843-55]. An experiment is described which further examined the modulating influence of line geometry in determining the magnitude of pseudone...
متن کاملExploring dyslexics' phonological deficit I: lexical vs sub-lexical and input vs output processes.
We report a series of experiments designed to explore the locus of the phonological deficit in dyslexia. Phonological processing of dyslexic adults is compared to that of age- and IQ-matched controls. Dyslexics' impaired performance on tasks involving nonwords suggests that sub-lexical phonological representations are deficient. Contrasting nonword repetition vs auditory nonword discrimination ...
